Saints Row®: The Third™ Review: The Craziest GTA Alternative
Saints Row®: The Third™ is a 3rd person action RPG game with open world developed by Volition Inc. in 2011. In the game, you play as one of The Saints to resist new gangs and face the new enemy, STAG (Special Tactical Anti-Gang unit). The action takes place in the new setting of Steelport city, and you can complete the game differently to unlock alternative endings. Download Saints Row®: The Third™ for Xbox 360 on Xbox Live.
Graphics – 5/5
The proprietary Core Technology Group engine powers this chapter of the game. It looks very smooth for an 8 years old game. If you compare it to its rival GTA IV, you see that SR looks even better due to advanced lighting and more saturated terrains. Developers also used the HAVOK physics engine, so character animation is rather realistic.
Gameplay – 4.5/5
Saints Row®: The Third™ game was always meant to be a crazy alternative of GTA. Developers did their best to cram the game with action, explosions, and madcap characters. The primary purpose of the main character is to lead gangsters from the Third Street Saints grouping to fight back their control territories of the city.
Saints Row®: The Third™ gameplay consists of frequent shootouts and chasing. You can use various guns, such as pistols, machine guns, rocket launchers, shotguns, and other popular weapons. Some of them are unique for the genre — for example, military unmanned aerial vehicles and flashbang grenades.
You are allowed to play for a custom character. You are free to choose clothes, bodies, faces, and even car designs. Some of the vehicles are marked as ‘special,’ and you can unlock them by completing missions. Once you achieve them, you can open the smartphone and order any of these vehicles to your place. The leveling system allows you to upgrade the character’s skills. You can convert respect-points into special skills like invulnerability to falling and unlimited sprinting.
Controls – 5/5
The test of PC and console inputs for this Saints Row®: The Third™ review showed that it’s similarly comfortable to play the game with keyboard-plus-mouse and gamepad setups. If you feel unconfident about the accuracy of shooting, you can activate aim-assist.
Replay Value – 4.5/5
Saints Row®: The Third™ full game completion takes over 11 hours. You can play it either in solo mode or in LAN cooperative to have more fun. There are 2 endings, so you always have to make proper decisions to activate one of them.
