Full Review of Dead by Daylight: Special Edition. Survive!

3/8/2020

This intriguing multiplayer horror game pits a killer against four survivors while handing out large doses of delightful terror. It was created by Behaviour Interactive and Starbreeze Studios, and here’s a full review.

Graphics: 4.5

The graphics in the game, I would say, match the expected quality, and the developers seem to have polished everything in this section. They also have managed to set the game apart by keeping the textures sufficient enough and saved the effort for other essential features such as lighting effects and dynamic fog. Additionally, anytime you’re playing a level, you get to see new layouts and places where you can hide.

Gameplay: 4.5

In this category, several issues still detract from the experience. The game is quite fun when playing as a killer and very boring when you’re the survivor. However, this takes some explaining, definitely. The developers have tried to maintain balance in all aspects except when you have to choose to be a survivor.

In this game, four fragile and weak survivors try to run away from a raving, hostile and sinister antagonist who’s able to tear them apart with a few gruesome strikes. Where Evolve was about hunting the antagonist, this is all about the group’s pursuit who play the role of the key protagonists.

In-game, you can choose from the myriad of horror villains as well as different survivors. Each of them has their own unique equipment, skill tree, and cosmetic items. While the majority of the characters are based on film personalities, the game still has plenty of licensed characters including Michael Myers, Leather Face, and Freddy Kruger.

Controls: 4.0

As complicated as they seem at first, the game controls are still quite easy to grasp regardless of whether or not you’re a first-timer. As a player, you get to control all the game’s five roles whether it’s the killer or victim. One setback on the controls, however, is that the most actions are mapped to the shoulder buttons and triggers. A few tweaks in the controls will go a long way in improving the experience.

Replay Value: 4.5

This game is of high replay value. For instance, each and every time you enter a stage, it changes and creates infinite levels, scenarios and ultimately, fun. Until the servers shut down, you’ll probably find yourself playing it over and over as a killer. Additionally, this game seems not to have a start point, middle part, or an ending, making it the ideal way of enjoying the asymmetrical horror game.

Conclusion

The game may be short-lived and accompanied with lobby issues, but it’s genuinely frightening, original, whip-smart and exciting. While playing, you’ll feel like you’re right in the middle of a slasher movie, asking yourself whether you have the guts and wits to survive. If you prefer a more fast-paced game with less downtime, then this would be your preferred title, and you’ll sink hours into the intriguing horror adventure.

Pros
  • Genuinely nerve-wracking and tense
  • Unpredictable
  • Playing as the killer is really fun
Cons
  • Tends to become more repetitive with time
  • Connection and lobby issues
